Energy & Natural Resources

The resource and energy sector has long been a pillar of the Canadian economy, and with global supply uncertainty and renewed economic strength, promises to remain a key component of portfolio success for investors.

Frank Mersch and Norm Lamarche, two of Front Street Capital’s founding principals, and co-chief investment executives, are arguably the most successful resource sector investment managers in Canadian history. They currently manage more than $1.2 billion in resource fund assets.

Small Cap

Front Street Capital’s investment team, led by Norm Lamarche, Craig Porter, and Frank Mersch, have a strong and successful record in the small cap sector. They currently manage more than $400 million in assets in two small cap funds, using a “market down, flexible sector” approach that allows them to take advantage of the best opportunities for growth without the restrictions of a specific sectoral focus.

Income

Front Street manages the relative weightings of the long and short positions to achieve the investment objectives of generating a stable stream of income and enhanced capital growth while managing risk to preserve capital. These funds also engage in merger arbitrage, convertible arbitrage and trading in securities of issuers that may be involved in restructurings or business unit dispositions.

These funds provide the opportunity for capital growth and regular income through the selection, management and strategic trading of long and short positions primarily in securities of income trusts, common and preferred shares and corporate and government debt.

Canadian Equity

These funds consist of investments that generate capital gains, but will also include investments that generate income. Front Street will use the following techniques to manage the portfolio: long/short positions, short selling overvalued securities, pairs trading, convertible and merger arbitrage, trading in securities of distressed securities, and participating in restructuring situations.
